A Preamble …

A Preamble …

One of the more despicable things about the King’s government is its abuse if process … Its true, the process i talk about are ones of convention; processes that we as democratically minded Aussies have become accustomed to and not processes with constitutional protections. But, as in Willing Don’s US of A, we didn’t, and don’t, expect that a small group of unscrupulous men will ‘get themselves elected’ in order to be ‘allowed an opinion’ and with the express purpose of destroying a system, rightly or wrongly, based on democratic conventions – it is the weakness of us of the left; that we expect men to behave with honour, dignity and honesty. We do not expect, despite our knowledge of history, to find men in power over us whose soul purpose seems to reside in their ability to abuse their power to further not only their petty personal agendas but the ideologies of divine right.

We did not expect to find the reins of our parliament in the hands of criminals.

Then again, while there are many of us who have never had any doubt about the moral corruptions inherent in a party such as the LNP – a party that doesn’t believe in Democracy – yet, still, with that laxidaisical character inherent in good Aussies of ‘she’ll be right mate’, Aussies who’ve grown up with those values of honour and dignity and good will to all men – we didn’t really think that even these neoLiberals would actually be able to completely destroy our generous and inclusive society and use the ancient constitution to drag the lucky Country back into the doldrums of an intolerant and bigoted past.

All this, of course, leads to my point … Constitution Reform. We have a very outmoded and outdated constitution – a constitution designed by an ancient regime in a time whose values would shame us today – that supports the petty discretions of base men in their crimes against democratic process. And today, once this clique of men have squirmed their way in through the cracks built into the ancient constitution, into our hallowed parliament they are able to turn it into a boardroom. A boardroom where in secret they can run our country and our lives without any loose prying eyes or opposing opinions or the meddling people of a democratically inclusive – by convention – minded society.

Parliament, however, belongs to the people of Australia. It does not belong to a Government. This Constitution, however, allows a government (representative of the people or not) to usurp the parliament and turn it into the privileged private club of individuals. And should those individuals be corrupt, or somehow divinely inspired; should they revel in ideological secrecies, hidden dealings and miraclulous mischiefs … Then their club, Our Parliament, is forfeited to their petty personal whims; and our noble and ancient constitution allows it!

We do of course, still get to pay the bills.

“Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear.” – Thomas Jefferson.
