The Fitzgerald Principles
To act honourably and fairly and solely in the public interest.
To treat all citizens equally.
To tell the truth.
Not to mislead or deceive.
Not to withhold or obfuscate information to which voters are entitled.
Not to spend public money except for public benefit.
Not to use your position or information gained from your position for your benefit or the benefit of a family member, friend, political party or other related entity.
Such simple principles. Why would any person expect their chosen representative not to uphold these basic principles? Why would any prospective representative refuse to sign a copy?
We have a failure in the application of Australia’s democratic system. It is not wholly the fault of the system – though there is much fault in it – the fault is in the integrity and sincerity of those who we pay to represent us. They have forgotten that it is they who work for us .. not us for them. As a first step in returning Australia to Democracy and then reforming it, our prospective representatives need to sign a copy of these principles so we can ensure they do operate in our and the country’s interest. Why? Because they have proven to be untrustworthy. For us to live our lives as Democracy tells us we should be able to we need to trust our representatives and be sure that the system operates as we believe it should. This is the first step.
If your representative won’t sign a copy of these Principles, then he or she Should Not be Selected for Our Democratic Parliament. A failure to sign is a Willingness to Corrupt Democracy and, as we can see in Australia today, corrupts and cheapens our lives Now & in the Future!
