Utopia? Say what?
Young man with dreams, imagine this, you’re sitting on a bus pissing down with rain, human shit all over the place – smells, bits of rubbish, a big wad of chewing gum plastered to the seat in front of you. Peak hour. The old guy in the seat behind you leans forward and says, “On Queensland ABC the other night there was an interview with some uni students, they we asked about their visions of the future, say in 50yrs time. It was all fairy-floss stuff, butterfly recreation – took no account of the actual world… Makes me weep. One thing that they all seemed to believe was that ‘science’ will have solved the problem of climate change. There wasn’t much concrete explanation to it all just utopian vision, the interviewer didnt press any points – I dont think it was supposed to be scientific as such.. just a way of gauging future possibilities… I suppose. Personally, I think a bit of discussion on Utopias is just what the world needs.”
… Then he gets off. A big wet fat dude sits down next to you – smells, bits of rubbish etc, a big wad of chewing gum in his mouth. He has no visions. Then another bunch a little younger get on, confused by words but knowing what they need. They know the earth is key they know that there is not enough water and too much man. They think cheaper education will help. Not only help more people get higher paying jobs but help. They think dolphins and whales should be saved & no one should have to pay taxes. They think there’s a good chance of the world blowing up before they can buy a house… & they dont want grandma to die in pain.
They think the adults are doing a bad job, that they’ve ignored the critical problems especially the environment. They blame previous generations for being selfish.. that’s us, me. They think the priorities are not right and that things need to turn around?! They like privacy and say having the internet and a phone are a Right. They hope things will change. Hope! Well we’ve all heared that before. School kids, they’ll all vote in a year or two.
